Cheese and Potato Gratin – Family Recipe from Grandma

1️⃣ Preheat the oven:
Set the oven to 180°C and grease a baking dish (approx. 13 x 9 cm) with butter or use baking paper. This ensures that the gratin does not stick and gets a nice surface.

2️⃣ Peel and grate the potatoes:
Peel the potatoes and grate them coarsely. For best results, choose firm potatoes that do not become watery when grated. If the potatoes are very juicy, lightly squeeze out excess liquid with your hands or a kitchen towel.

3️⃣ Prepare the onion:
Finely chop the onion and fry it in butter over medium heat until translucent and soft. Do not fry for too long - the onion should be sweet and mild, not browned.

4️⃣ Mix the potatoes and cheese:
Place the fried onions in a large bowl. Add the grated potatoes and grated cheese and cheddar. Mix gently but thoroughly so that the cheese is evenly distributed throughout the potatoes.
