She kept glancing at his jacket pocket like someone half his age, hoping for fireworks and magic.
A perfect evening
The dinner was sumptuous in every way—a prime steak, a beautifully prepared lobster, special side dishes, elaborate desserts that they couldn’t even finish.
They talked and laughed together, reminiscing about their first small apartment, the car trip during which their car broke down in the middle of nowhere, and the pet they promised to adopt “someday soon.”
She really thought this was finally the moment she had been waiting for.
When the bill arrived at their table, she didn’t even glance at it. She was too focused on calming her breathing and her pounding heart.
She picked up the bill and looked at it.
Then she placed it squarely on the table between them.
“The total is three hundred and eighty dollars,” she said casually, as if discussing the weather. “Let’s split it evenly.”
She blinked, certain she had misunderstood.
“What did you say?”
“Let’s split it,” she repeated calmly. “That seems only fair to me.”
She stared at him, trying to process what had happened. He had planned this entire fancy evening. He had chosen this expensive restaurant. He had insisted on an expensive wine list.
He had said repeatedly, “This evening is going to be special.”
And now he expected her to give him a hundred and ninety dollars?
He wasn’t shocked by the money itself. He could easily pay half the bill. It wasn’t a problem at all.
“This just seems strange to me,” he said carefully, choosing his words. “You planned this entire evening for Valentine’s Day. Why should I pay for half of the special date you invited me to?”
His jaw tightened considerably.
“This is about a true partnership,” he said firmly. “We’re equals in this, aren’t we?”
“Of course we are,” he replied. “But a true partnership doesn’t mean you’re splitting the cost of a surprise dinner you planned just for me.”
The mood at the table changed dramatically. The background music suddenly felt intrusive and too loud.
For several long seconds, they just stared at each other, not saying a word.
The Sudden Exit That Changed Everything
Then he made a small gesture towards the waiter. The waiter approached the table quietly.
He handed over his credit card without saying anything to his girlfriend.
He paid the entire bill without a word between them.
No discussion. No argument. No explanations.
He got up from the table.
"See you later," he said in a quiet and emotionless voice.
And then he just walked out of the restaurant.
Just like that, without looking back.
He sat there completely frozen, feeling the heat rise up his neck and his hands start to shake uncontrollably.
He couldn't comprehend what had just happened. Was this some kind of abuse of power? Did he expect her to run after him? Was he going to apologize for something?
The noise of the restaurant around him was muffled. She felt deeply humiliated and exposed in front of strangers.
Then their waiter slowly approached the table again.
The woman looked extremely uncomfortable.
“I’m really sorry,” she said quietly, almost in a whisper. “I don’t think I should keep quiet about this.”
A feeling of fear settled in her stomach.
